Lunch break was the time when Cassie usually relaxed from the stress and such. So sitting outside on one of the niches, she looked ahead at the flowers that were near the trees a few feet in front of her. Taking her camera, she adjusted the focus on it, zooming in on one of the petunias that were growing at the foot of the tee. Brushing some of her blonde locks out of her face, she lifted the camera to her face, holding it in front of her eyes as she looked through the lens. Nature wasn’t exactly her best subject in the world, but it was good enough. she loved taking pictures, and if anything could look beautiful, then it was worth taking a picture of.
The day had been a long one, even if it was only half the day. Her classes had seemed so long; who really cared about the population of Antarctica back in 1869? No one she knew, really. But either way, no matter the subject, she was having one of those days where she just wasn’t able to sit still and focus. All morning she had found herself craving to go outside and take pictures, especially some flowers, because, soon, the flowers wouldn’t be there to be shot, so this was a key chance. So she was ultimately very excited when the final bell before lunch had rung; she had literally sprinted outside to the courtyards, itching to take a picture.
Wearing a white blouse with slightly puffy sleeves that ended at her elbows, and black skinny jeans along with her black and white polka dotted flats, she stood up slowly, going over to the flowers and crouching down and snapping a picture of the petunia. She was in a nature mood, so she was enjoying taking the random picture. It was because of that, and the fact that there wasn’t any other subject for her to focus on.
Letting a small breath leave her lips, she went back towards her bag, putting her camera back into her camera case. Sitting down on the bench, she pulled her feet up so that she was sitting pretzel style on the bench. Resting her head in her hands, she glanced around for some sight of human intellect. None came to her. Biting the inside of her cheek, she sat up, leaning back against the back of the bench, pulling her feet up to her chest.
Reaching into her pocket, she took out her iPod nano, turning it on as she unwound the earphones from around it and plugged them into her ears. Shuffling through, she finally managed to land on a song that she wanted; Little Miss Obsessive by Ashlee Simpson. Sure, it wasn’t her favorite artist in the world, but it was still a pretty good song to listen to. Mostly because she loved Tom Higgenson’s voice a lot. Letting the sounds of Ashlee Simpson run through her ears, she felt herself smiling as she heard her own little voice singing along with the words of the song. Okay, so it was a catchy song.
The song soon changed to Heart-Shaped Box by Nirvana, and she put the iPod in her pocket, letting the song play through her ears. Letting a lonely breath escape her lips, she rested her back against the bench in a more comfortable position. She still had yet to see anybody that could save her from being lonely. She'd come out here during her lunch period to be with people! Not be alone...

The second the bell rang for lunch Kate ran out of the class, not without noticing the death glare the professor sent her of course. She couldn't help it, his class was sooo boring, Antarctica? Really? Come on now! Who cared? Not her that's for sure. Her run turned into a power walk and soon faded into a calm walk as she headed for the bathroom. She had to wash her face to clear the dullness of class off. When she was done she headed for the cafeteria, much to her dismay there was nothing edible, for her any way, the school never appreciated her vegan life style and insisted on serving meat in every meal. She sighed and decided to just skip out on lunch promising herself a grand feast for dinner and headed for the courtyard.
She stretched her arms high above her, loving the sun. It was a beautiful day. Perfect for being outside. She was almost glad that there wasn't anything good to eat, because it made her come outside and she was glad for it, sometimes things really did happen for a reason. She hated when people said that, "things happen for a reason." What was the reason behind murder? Rape? Hunger? Cancer? There was none. There was no reason why her father had to be such an ass, why he had to treat her and Sam and her mother the way he did. She hated her father. He was such a jerk. But, she couldn't' think of that now.
She spent half her time worrying about her mother, and wondering what her father was doing to her. She barely slept at night. It was all she could do to keep from going insane. She was doing an OK job at forgetting just for today, and she wouldn't mess that up. So she just walked around looking for something to do. She saw Cas Weston from the corner of her eye. She was a cool chick, they were partnered for projects a couple of times throughout the year and she always did her part, unlike some people.
Cas was taking pictures, Kate could appreciate that, she loved photography. It was a hobby of hers. Though lately she hadn't carried her camera around as much as she used to. She was growing out of the habit and it sadened her. So she decided to walk over to Cas and say "Hey." On her way she tripped on a rock. "Great" she muttered to herself.
