Jim couldn’t help but notice how at ease this girl seemed. The whole situation was kind of weird; as if there was something not quite right about it or as if it was doomed to failure. He couldn’t help but notice how often a smile graced her features. It was a good look for her, to be smiling. It seemed natural; unlike some people whose smile looked as if it was something that was plastered on shortly before a long day off ass-kissing and general fakery. Instead, Katie’s smile made her seem that much more honest and genuine; in the long run it was a good thing, not a bad thing.
“If gaming is your thing,” he started to explain. “I’m a beta tester for Xbox. They send me all kinds of new games… It’s sort of a part time job I guess.” There was no need to burden her with all the details; like that his father was on the board at Microsoft and that was the biggest reason he got such a cool part time job. In fact, a FedEx package had arrived at the dorms earlier today probably containing some new games for him to try. The analysis that he had to do after completing the beta version of the game nearly took the fun out of the process. “If you and Chris want to check some out with me, that’d be cool.”
Jim figured he’d mention this other friend; this other part of Katie that was not here tonight. His thoughts meandered again to this other guy that was able to ride comfortably on Katie’s coat tails. If he was anything like Katie, Jim had a feeling that maybe he’d found his niche. If he could get comfortable with a few people before classes started it would make it that much easier to convince himself to get out of bed every morning.

"That's beyond cool" Katie exclaimed, then toned it down a bit. "Chris would absolutely love that." She nodded in approval. "How'd you get that job?" she asked. She respected anyone with a job, no matter what it was, it was the type of thing that built character. She didn't need one, obviously what with her parents being loaded, but she wanted one, not that they'd ever let her get a job.
"I need a job" she finally mused aloud. "I can't of course..." she said more to herself. She really hated being held back by her father.
She reached for the M&Ms again accidentally brushing on Jamie's hand. She withdrew it quickly with a handful of the candies. She began her process of picking out the yellows and browns, handing the yellow to James and the brown back into the bag.

Jim tried not to seem too pleased with himself about the whole game tester thing. “My dad works for Microsoft. I mean, I’m sure it improved my chances at least… And I wouldn’t leave him alone about it. I’m pretty sure someone else just did it for him as a favor,” he shrugged this off, but smiled. His dad loved what he did and in some weird sort of way Jim actually aspired to follow in his father’s footsteps – at least with the whole ‘doing what you enjoy’ thing.
“Why can’t you get a job?” He asked before taking the small handful of yellow M&M’s and putting it entirely in his mouth. It was probably too many for a polite mouthful, but it wasn’t a big deal to him. There wasn’t anyone to yell about the proper amount of M&M’s one should attempt to consume at one time in the movie theater.

"That's cool" she said. It was cool that his dad worked for Microsoft and that's how he got his hands on the latest games. She wished her dad could get something cool at the bank, besides those cheesy give a way gifts they gave to new costumers, when she was little she loved the stuffed animals and piggy banks that he brought home, but now they were just - cheesy.
Kate laughed as he put a large amount of yellow M&Ms in his mouth "Don't choke!" she warned. "I can't work cause dad won't let me" she said. "he thinks I'll like love money so much I'll quit school ... or at least that's what he says, the real reason is he can't handle the idea that I won't need him for his money. That's all he has to offer really, and if I can get it on my own... well that wouldn't work in his interest.." she explained.
It was true, that's why he never let her mom or Sam get jobs. He hated that Elaine (her mom) had more money than him at one point and he never let her live it down. She wondered why her dad was like that, why money was so important. She couldn't wait to cut herself off of her family. One day she wouldn't have to worry about her mom all the time. One day she wouldn't have to live in fear of her damn father.

He didn’t mean to brag about his dad and all of that. Living where he did and growing up where he did a lot of people’s parents were somehow involved with the huge media conglomerate that was Microsoft and all of its subsidiaries. If anything, it was strange to find someone who worked for Apple; or something that wasn’t distinctly Seattle-ish. His dad had given him basically two choices for work during high school: Starbucks or video game testing. He was pretty sure he couldn’t make a Grande Mocha Frappachino any better than stomach drinking one. Game testing was easy and fun. It would be nice to have other people to play the games with.
Jim was surprised that she was so forthcoming with the info about her dad. He sounded like a typical corporate control freak who wanted to come home to his entirely dependent family. It sounded like this guy was like the worst parts of Jim’s dad. It had to be a guy thing to want to be so in control of his little family. The idea of being so manipulative was startling, off-putting and generally unfavorable in Jim’s eyes. “How old are you?” Jim asked her suddenly. If she was old enough she could get a job and her father wouldn’t have a say in it. If work was something she was really interested, why shouldn’t she be able to give it a try?

She was caught off guard a little by the question. "Fifteen?" she said wondering whether or not it was the right answer. "Why? How old are you?" She asked.
She wondered to herself what kind of job she would get if she could. What were her skills? She could give waitressing a shot, or maybe being a cashier. She didn't know. She was definitely a people person, a bit weird and sometimes didn't have a filter, but she was good at being friendly.
She then wondered just how high up in the Microsoft industries Jamie's father was. She always wondered how rich someone was, it was in her blood, she couldn't help it, not that she would ever judge anyone on it, but she liked to know people weren't her friend just because of her money. Which is why she never let anyone know right off the bat just how rich she was.
She reached back into the bag and pulled out mostly browns. "Think we're running low on the edible M&Ms"

She was fifteen. It was a little bit of a surprise to him; she seemed older than that. Of course, fifteen wasn’t that young. “I’m seventeen,” he grinned. Their age difference wasn’t that big of a deal to him, after all, they were just acquaintances, maybe friends, right? “I was asking because I was thinking you could go get a job without your dad knowing… If working is your thing,” he explained. It seemed like kind of a weird train of thought, but his gears were already turning. The paycheck he got once a month for his video game testing varied depending on how many games he got done; with help it could be more.
Jim sat up and shook out the remaining M&M’s in his hand. It was a pretty full handful of mostly browns. Picking out a blue and a green, he handed them to her, feeling how warm her hand was and shook his head. “Boy, those didn’t last near long enough,” he said glancing at the screen. He was hungry enough for dinner, having not eaten yet because he was stupid that way. “I could stand to eat – you want to get something? I’ll pay since you spent your cash on movies you’re not even going to see? Or I can just get us something from the concessions? They probably wouldn’t see me sneak back here again?”

She shook her head. "Dad knows everything..." she thought of the private investigator he had sent to spy on her mother when he thought she was having an affair, in fact she had a book club or something.
She smiled and thanked him for the non brown non yellow M&Ms he offered. When he then offered to get food she stood up. "Let's go..." she said offering a him her hand.
"And I'll pay" she said. "Can't have you waste gaming money!" she said smiling. "It'll be on dad" she said thinking of her credit card. She wondered what else she could manage to waste money on tonight.
If she was old enough, she would buy a car, a really expensive one. "It's the least he could do." She wondered where they would go and what they would eat. She was pretty hungry, she hadn't eaten since lunch around one.

With a stomach only too willing to follow, Jim took her hand and brushed off his pants. The ground they’d been sitting on wasn’t dirty necessarily, but there was a decent amount of dust. “All right, you can pay, but I’m driving,” he said, finding his keys in his pocket. “We’ve got to be quiet or we’re gonna get caught.” He stepped toward where they had entered between the curtains. Not wanting to lose here amongst all the Star Wars freaks, he stepped in front of her and took her hand, closing his around it tightly. “C’mon,” he whispered, peeking out.
All of the theater goers seemed pretty impressed with the classic sci-fi movie splayed across the screen. No one seemed to notice them as they slipped out the side door. They were closer to his car than he’d thought and he took the hat from her pocket and placed it on his head. “Lady Katherine? Or Kaitlyn perhaps?” He said, bowing low and dipping the hat, escorting her to the passenger side, opening the door briskly. “Away with us!”
